A small device, called a microkeratome is attached to a suction ring placed on your eye, the blade of which is used to cut a thin flap on the surface of the cornea. The flap is folded back, exposing a layer of tissue called the stroma, which is inspected for debris and dried.

You will then be asked to focus on a fixed spot as your doctor begins the laser, cutting and removing corneal tissue based on the measurements taken at the initial examination. The flap is then repositioned and left to heal. Because no stitches are used, you will be required to wear an eye patch to prevent rubbing, irritation, and pressure that might disturb the healing process.

Both eyes can be operated on at the same time if you are healthy enough and have ample recovery time. In some cases, however, doctors will recommend that their patient receive monovision treatment, which is the correction of only one eye for near or far vision. LASIK surgery typically takes about 5 to 10 minutes per eye.

Either surgery costs the Army about $1,000 per patient, much lower than the approximately $1,700 per eye average paid by the civilian shopper, and could potentially benefit about one-third of the Army’s employees. Priority for surgery is determined on a case-by-case basis, but soldiers who will be involved in combat are usually favored.

The most well known name in refractive eye surgery, LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) provides vision correction through the use of a laser by reshaping the cornea and changing its focusing power.

Since 1993, LASIK has been performed in the United States on millions of patients with the use of a wide variety of different lasers. This procedure can be used to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism (misshapen cornea).

Before you undergo LASIK surgery, or any refractive surgery, you will be instructed to discontinue the use of contacts for 1 to 4 weeks prior to surgery to allow the cornea to return to its original shape. The day of surgery, you will go to your ophthalmologist’s office or surgical center where the procedure will be performed. A mild anesthetic will be given, usually orally, before surgery, and numbing eye drops will be administered, which eliminate the element of pain, although some patients do experience some discomfort.

For the past four years, Army officials at Fort Bragg, NC have dedicated themselves to the continuous improvement of the military’s vision. They have been performing eye surgery, such as LASIK and PRK, on qualified soldiers.

For about 10,000 to 12,000 combatants a year, keeping track of glasses, prescription goggles and contact lenses on the battlefield could be a thing of the past. The vision improvement that eye surgery offers can help soldiers who have to react quickly during battle and negates the risk of liability for spectacled soldiers who loose their glasses during combat.

Civilians continue to choose the LASIK procedure for refractive vision correction about 90% of the time, but for many active duty soldiers, PRK is the more logical choice. Because PRK is preformed on the surface of the eye, there is no flap cut from the cornea that needs to heal back over the eye as there is in LASIK.

For soldiers who put their eyes under pressure from physical strain or jumping from high altitudes, not having to worry about complications from damage to the healing flap is an added bonus.

In The Study, Rigid Gas-Permeable

In the study, rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lens users were instructed to discontinue wearing lenses 3 weeks before the initial examination. Patients were examined at 3-week intervals until a stable refraction was achieved. Of 55 eyes of 28 patients, 31 eyes achieved refractive stability by the second visit (early group, 3 weeks after discontinuing contact lens use). But 24 eyes required more than 2 visits, (late group, at least 6 weeks after discontinuance) to achieve stability.

No significant between-group differences were observed in age, or gender of patients, or anatomical or optical characteristics of their eyes. However, the study suggests that the number of years that a patient has been wearing rigid contact lenses may influence the time it will take for a stable refraction to be achieved. The study also noted that the corneal changes are most pronounced with rigid gas-permeable contact lenses, although they can occur with soft contact lenses as well.

While the percentage of RGP contact lens users is a relatively small percentage of all contact lens users, the study’s findings support an important consideration in optimizing LASIK outcomes and enhancing patient satisfaction, said Samuel Masket, MD, chairman of the Eye Surgery Education Council, the public education arm of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Foundation.

While There Are Many Eye Doctors In New York

While there are many eye doctors in New York State, not all offer laser vision correction. Many eye doctors in New York treat vision disorders such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye diseases. Only skilled ophthalmologists that have experience treating refractive errors perform LASIK in NY. LASIK surgery is very safe, and is one of the most effective eye surgeries performed in New York State.

We offer people a way to find a doctor for LASIK eye surgery in New York by placing many skilled LASIK surgeons in New York in one website. Furthermore, we can help patients find laser eye surgery in NY at an affordable cost and provide financing for their procedure.

Over the past several years there has been an increase in laser eye surgery procedures performed in New York. Increasing levels of technology and demand, coupled with declining equipment and laser costs have helped the popularity of laser eye surgery in New York increase steadily. Nationally, about 1.5 million LASIK surgeries are expected to be performed in 2001, with a substantial portion of them in New York.

The FDA has launched a new national study of patient outcomes, along with the National Eye Institute and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) to try to compile more information on the rate of poor LASIK results.

The study is likely to take years to complete. In the meantime, experts said information given to patients considering LASIK surgery should warn more clearly of the possibility of long-term vision disruptions, including “halos,” “starbursts,” blurriness, and multiple vision.

Lasik eye surgery has undergone a lot of advancements and sometimes the sheer variety of choice the patient has regarding the kind of surgical procedures he can avail is mind-boggling. And at times it might be difficult for the patient to figure out which would be the best procedure for him.

The first thing that you should look for in your surgeon is the experience he carries. There are a lot of practitioners today but you should trust your eyes only with the best who have a proven track record of successful operations over a significant period of time. Experience not only enhances their skill but also makes them better equipped to tackle complications.

The best way to know how experienced a surgeon is to find out how many similar operations he has performed. If he is close to 500 this eye surgeries, then you should feel quite confident in his hands.

While you are on your quest for you eye surgeon you should always keep a few things in mind. Ideally the this surgeon should be in constant communication with you all along the operation.

There are also health plans that provide the list of ophthalmologists that execute New York refractive surgery. Nevertheless, you should independently check their credentials. Although the point of choosing them is to save you some money, you surely do not want to risk your lifetime vision quality just to save some money.

The factors to consider in finding the right LASIK surgeon should be their professional experiences and track record, the cost of their procedure, the procedure itself and the equipment they actual use. Among all of these, the cost should be the last in your list and safety and the surgeon’s efficiency should come first.

Because Lasik technology produces excellent results, a good surgeon is still the prime factor to the overall success of having New York refractive surgery (or in any major city ) performed on your eyes.

The articles below explore a wide variety of topics, and cover each topic in depth from a consumer perspective. If you do not see a topic you’re looking for or would like a LASIK consultation in your area, please feel free to contact a LASIK surgeon using our directory contact form for information from LASIK professionals.

Post surgery effects can be avoided depending upon the patient’s recovery time and the surgeon’s skill. The choice of a good surgeon significantly affects the results.

Both Los Angeles and New York City are considered to have the worlds’ most renowned and leading eye centers to perform Lasik surgery. For example, New York City Lasik surgery and eye surgeons undergo specialized training for this particular type of eye surgeries.

The primary consideration in finding a good eye surgeon in any major city, even if you’re looking for a laser vision correction Yonkers doctor, should be that he is a licensed surgeon and uses only the FDA approved laser. One way to find such a surgeon is to consult a physician and seek advice from friends who had undergone the procedure before. These people will most likely give you good recommendations.

They provide the necessary information about their eye surgeon’s qualifications. However, do not assume that all the ads are hundred percent reliable. Watch out for misleading info. and claims. There are numerous academic and research institutes which can provide you with precise expertise when performing eye surgeries.

A Very Important Part Of The Eye Is The Cornea

A very important part of the eye is the cornea. This is the clear covering over your iris which is responsible for focusing light to form the image on the retina. Vision defects such as myopia or nearsightedness, hyperopia or farsightedness and astigmatism are all associated with cornea disorders.

Nearsightedness occurs when the curve of the cornea is too round and the images are formed in front of the retina. On the other hand, when the cornea is too flat, the images are then formed behind the retina and this condition develops farsightedness. And astigmatism occurs when light rays strike the cornea at different angles that it cannot be properly focused on the retina.

Lasik or Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis eye surgery is the surgical procedure used to correct these refractive errors of the eyes. In both Los Angeles Lasik eye surgery and New York Lasik eye surgery procedures, they are done with the use of the microkeratome or a computer-guided laser.

With the use of a specially guided laser, the cornea is sculpted into a prescribed shape. The amount and shape is predetermined by the eye surgeon according to the eye tests conducted before the surgery. After removing some tissues on the cornea, the flap is replaced back to its normal position. The LASIK eye procedure does not need stitches since the flap seals naturally. And the whole operation takes only about twenty minutes to perform.
